Have you started seeing some variation of messages like, “You can still crush your goals,” or “The year isn’t done yet,” and one of my personal favorites, “You still have 23 days left to get it done!”

Since I’m a disrupter and I care about your mental health and overall well-being, I want to challenge you to take an alternative approach. As 2023 comes to an end, instead of pushing yourself to produce, produce, produce, I encourage you to fully embody this one word.

Rest is the word I chose to guide me through 2023, and I will intentionally embrace it this month.

If you’ve been following the WHOA MAMA Blog for a while, you’re familiar with the one-word method. However, I’ll take a moment to get our new friends caught up.

Over the last five years, I’ve adopted the one-word method instead of creating new year resolutions. This is where you select one word to help guide you through the different pillars of life such as mental, emotional, physical, relational, financial, and spiritual well-being.  In the past, my words have ranged from serenity, intentional, grow, elevate, and now rest.

So, as we close out 2023 you won’t find me putting in extra hours at work or hustling and bustling in my business. Instead, I’ll be grounding myself in the word that started it all this year.

You will find me resting.

As we focus on rest this month, let us step away from the busyness of the holidays and into the 4Rs of self-care. Rest, relax, recharge, and reset. You can focus on one or all four depending on what your mind, body, and spirit need.

Rest

by ceasing movement, aka sitting your butt down to refresh yourself. Some self-care activities can include a little Netflix & chill, sitting outside, getting more sleep, or drinking tea in a comfy chair.

Relax

by becoming less tense or anxious. Self-care activities to help with relaxation may include taking a bubble bath, progressive muscle relaxation, massaging your scalp, or doing breathing exercises.

Recharge

by recovering from mental or physical exhaustion. Recharging will look different depending on who you are and what season you’re in right now. Some self-care activities include alone time, stretching, and eating nutritious meals, while others might prefer a coffee date with friends or a group exercise class.

Reset

by adjusting your systems or doing your day-to-day activities in a different way. To find clarity or to recenter yourself consider self-care activities like meditating, journaling/brain dumping, organizing, or setting new goals.

As we wrap up the year, I hope you choose rest over the played-out grinding narrative we’re presented with. Your goals will be there in 2024, and by prioritizing rest, you’ll feel rejuvenated enough to tackle them.

The next time we check in, I’ll share my word for 2024, and I would love to hear yours. Check out one of my old blog posts here to learn more about the one-word method.

Until next time…
